Is it overkill?
For a single game, almost certainly. The RTX 5090 has 32 GB of GDDR7 on a 512-bit bus, more than any game uses. The reasons to buy one are 4K at very high refresh rates, heavy ray tracing, and workloads outside gaming.
Power, cable and case
The card is rated around 575 W, so plan for a 1000 W-class power supply and a case with excellent airflow. Seat the 12V-2x6 cable fully, and avoid sharp bends at the connector.
Where the CPU limit appears
At 1440p and below, a 5090 can end up waiting for the processor. A top-tier CPU matters more with this card than with any other, and below 4K the extra graphics power can go unused.
Who it is really for
Players who want to maximize a 4K high-refresh display without compromises, or who also render and run heavy workloads. For GTA 6 alone, a 5080 or 5070 Ti is a far more economical way to reach the ultra tier.
Building for it: what else costs money
The card is only part of the bill. A 1000 W-class power supply, a large well-ventilated case, a top-tier CPU and a monitor that can use the output all add up, and a 5090 in a mid-range system will often run slower than a 5080 in a balanced one.
Noise, heat and the room
At 575 W, the card heats the room as well as the case. In summer, a long gaming session will noticeably warm a small room, and fans can be loud when the case cannot exhaust the heat quickly enough. A good case and sensible fan curves matter more here than on any other card on this site.
Multi frame generation on a 240 Hz display
One real use for the 5090's features is a very high refresh rate monitor. Multi frame generation can fill a 240 Hz display from a base frame rate that the card can sustain comfortably, which is only worth doing when the base is already high. It makes motion smoother; it does not make the game respond faster.

Questions about the RTX 5090
Is 32 GB of VRAM ever needed for gaming?
Not for a single game today. It matters for very large mods, texture packs and professional workloads.
Do I need a new power supply for the RTX 5090?
Most likely yes: 1000 W is the common recommendation, with the correct 12V-2x6 cable.
RTX 5090 or RTX 4090 for GTA 6?
The 5090 is faster and has 32 GB, but at a much higher power draw. The 4090 is already past the point where 4K gaming is GPU-limited in most games.
