The VRAM argument

The RX 7900 XTX carries 24 GB of GDDR6 on a 384-bit bus, the same memory capacity as an RTX 4090 and 8 GB more than an RTX 4080. For texture-heavy games and for modded installs that grow over time, that is the single most important number on its spec sheet.

Raster versus ray tracing

In ordinary rendering the 7900 XTX is a flagship-class card that competes with the RTX 4080 in many games. In ray tracing it is behind, which is the trade you accept. If GTA 6 offers meaningful ray-traced options, plan to use them selectively.

Power, size and noise

At around 355 W, this is a big card. Check the physical clearance in your case and the number of power connectors your power supply provides, and expect it to need good airflow.

A 4K profile

  • 4K, ultra settings, FSR Quality.
  • Textures maximum: no reason to hold back with 24 GB.
  • Ray tracing medium at most, and only if frame times stay smooth.

A very large card

Many 7900 XTX models are three slots thick and long, and some partner cards need three 8-pin power connectors rather than two. Check the number of PCIe power cables your power supply offers and the space in your case before choosing a specific model.

What 24 GB lets you do besides GTA 6

Large texture mods, high-resolution video editing and some creative workloads can use far more memory than games do. If you are likely to do any of these, the extra memory has value beyond a single game, which is part of the case for choosing this card over a cheaper one with less.

Driver features worth knowing

AMD's driver includes tools that work in nearly any game: Radeon Anti-Lag to reduce input delay, image sharpening, and AFMF, a driver-level frame generation option that can add frames even where a game has no support. AFMF is convenient, but it can show artifacts in fast motion, so it is best as an extra for smooth displays rather than a way to rescue a low frame rate.

Questions about the RX 7900 XTX

RX 7900 XTX or RTX 4080?

The 7900 XTX has 24 GB against 16 GB and similar raster speed; the 4080 leads in ray tracing and features such as DLSS 3.

Does the RX 7900 XTX support FSR 4?

As of writing, FSR 4 is exclusive to the newer RDNA 4 cards. The 7900 XTX uses FSR 3 and earlier versions.

Is 24 GB overkill for GTA 6?

For the game itself probably yes, but it removes any memory concern for the life of the card.
