What RDNA 4 changes

The RX 9070 XT is the flagship of AMD's newest architecture, with 16 GB of GDDR6 on a 256-bit bus and a clear focus on closing the gap in ray tracing. It is the first Radeon in a while where leaving ray tracing on is a reasonable conversation.

FSR 4 and the exclusivity catch

FSR 4 is a considerably better upscaler than earlier versions and it is, as of writing, limited to RDNA 4 cards. If GTA 6 on PC supports it, this is the card that benefits; AMD has not said whether older generations will get it.

Against the RTX 5070 Ti

These are direct rivals. The Nvidia card has DLSS 4 and a mature ecosystem; the AMD card competes well in rasterization and is closer in ray tracing than any previous Radeon. Which you prefer depends on the features the game ends up supporting.

A profile to start from

• 1440p, ultra settings, FSR 4 Quality if available.
• 4K with FSR Balanced or Performance.
• Ray tracing on medium if frame times stay even.

What "closer in ray tracing" actually means

RDNA 4 narrows the gap with Nvidia rather than closing it. In some games the 9070 XT now trades blows with cards it would previously have lost to by a wide margin, while in the heaviest ray-traced scenes Nvidia still leads. A realistic expectation is "usable with ray tracing on a medium setting", not "ray tracing for free".

The newest-architecture caveat

A brand-new architecture can have rough edges in its first months: driver updates that change performance, features that arrive later. This is normal for any vendor and usually settles quickly. If you buy a 9070 XT to play on launch day, expect to update drivers more than once.

Power connectors on partner cards

Many partner 9070 XT models use two or three conventional 8-pin power connectors rather than the newer 16-pin one. Count what your power supply provides before you buy, and use separate cables for each connector rather than splitting one cable into several, since that practice is one of the most common causes of instability at high power draw.
