Why the 3060 matters more than its age suggests
Few graphics cards are as widely owned as the RTX 3060. It has sat near the top of Steam's hardware survey for years, which makes it the quiet baseline for many PC releases: if a game runs acceptably here, most of the audience can play it. That is the lens to use for GTA 6 on PC, whenever it arrives.
12 GB is the number doing the work
Next to the faster RTX 3060 Ti, the 3060 gives up speed but carries half again as much memory. For a game with large streamed open-world textures that trade can go either way: the Ti will post higher frame rates at 1080p, while the 3060 is less likely to hit a memory wall when textures are turned up. Our estimate puts it at the bottom of the minimum tier on speed, with VRAM as its main argument.
A sensible starting configuration
If the PC version ships with the usual options, begin here and change one thing at a time:
- 1080p output, with DLSS Quality if the game offers it.
- Medium-to-high textures: you have the memory for them.
- Medium shadows and volumetrics; ray tracing off.
- Aim for a steady 30 FPS first, and raise the target only if frame times stay even.
When to upgrade instead
If you want 1440p, or 60 FPS at high settings, the 3060 is where the plan stops working. The RTX 4060 Ti and 4070 are the natural next steps, but the sensible move is to wait for official requirements before spending anything.
Pairing it with the right monitor
The 3060 is at its best driving a 1080p display, and a variable-refresh monitor (G-Sync Compatible or FreeSync) is the cheapest upgrade you can make alongside it. With variable refresh, a game that wobbles between 40 and 55 FPS feels far smoother than it would on a fixed 60 Hz panel.
If your display does not support variable refresh, cap the frame rate at a clean divisor of its refresh rate, such as 30 or 60 on a 60 Hz screen, so frames are delivered evenly.
Mistakes to avoid on this card
The most common one is assuming that 12 GB of memory means 1440p is easy. Memory capacity is not what limits the 3060 at higher resolutions; the GPU core is. Raise resolution only through upscaling.
The second is turning on ray tracing because the card technically supports it. In a heavy open world it will cost more frames than the card has to give.

Questions about the RTX 3060
Is the RTX 3060 12 GB better than the 3060 Ti for GTA 6?
On raw speed no, the Ti is clearly faster. On memory yes: 12 GB against 8 GB. For 1080p frame rates we would take the Ti; the 3060 only makes sense if you expect to push textures hard at higher resolutions.
Does the 8 GB version of the RTX 3060 change the verdict?
Yes. A cut-down 8 GB model exists. This page assumes the 12 GB card; the 8 GB version should be treated like any other 8 GB card, with textures lowered sooner.
Should I buy a new GPU before the console launch?
Not for GTA 6. The November 19, 2026 launch is on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and no PC date or specification exists. Buying now for a game with no PC release is a gamble.
