The console comparison, with numbers

The PS5's graphics chip has 36 compute units of RDNA 2. The RX 6700 XT has 40 of the same architecture, plus 12 GB of dedicated memory. That makes it one of the closest desktop analogues to the console GPU, which is why we use it as a reference when discussing PS5-class performance.

The caveat is that a console is a closed platform tuned around its hardware. A PC port needs more headroom than the raw numbers suggest.

The 12 GB advantage

Compared with an RTX 3070, the 6700 XT trades some raw speed and the Nvidia feature set for 12 GB against 8 GB. For a texture-heavy open world, that memory is the more useful of the two over time.

Where Nvidia pulls ahead

Ray tracing performance and DLSS. If GTA 6 on PC leans on ray-traced effects, this generation of Radeon will lose more frame rate than its Nvidia counterparts. For a raster-first presentation the gap is much smaller.

A high-tier profile

  • 1440p, high settings, FSR Quality.
  • Textures high: the memory is there to use.
  • Ray tracing off.

Pairing it with a Ryzen processor

AMD's Smart Access Memory lets the CPU use all of the card's video memory at once, and it works best with Ryzen 5000 and newer processors, although recent Intel systems can use the equivalent Resizable BAR. If you have a compatible platform, turn it on in the BIOS: it is a small but free improvement.

Temperatures and power

At 230 W the 6700 XT is not extreme, but a poorly ventilated case will push its fans harder than they need to run. Check that the GPU hotspot temperature stays in a sensible range in a long session, and clean the filters if it does not.

Buying one used: what to check

Many 6700 XT cards are on the used market. Check that the seller allows returns, ask for a screenshot of the card under load with temperatures visible, and test on arrival for artifacts, loud or failing fans and crashes in a demanding game. A card that runs fine for an hour at full load is a good sign; one that crashes in minutes should go back.

Questions about the RX 6700 XT

RX 6700 XT or RTX 3070?

The 3070 is faster in many games and has DLSS and stronger ray tracing. The 6700 XT has 12 GB against 8 GB, which can matter more in a texture-heavy game.

Does the RX 6700 XT support ray tracing?

Yes, in hardware, but ray-traced performance is behind Nvidia's equivalents. Treat it as an option to try, not a default.

Is the RX 6700 XT as good as a PS5?

In the same class on paper. The console's closed design and unified memory mean a PC needs some margin to match it in practice.
