Raster first
The RX 7800 XT's strength is plain rendering performance: it is often a little faster than its Nvidia rivals in games that do not use ray tracing, and it carries 16 GB of memory on a 256-bit bus. For 1440p high settings that is a very comfortable combination.
The ray-tracing footnote
AMD's ray-tracing performance in this generation trails Nvidia's, and in a demanding open world the gap can be large. This is why we place the card in the high tier despite its VRAM: it has the memory of an ultra card but not the ray-tracing speed.
FSR 3 frame generation: when it helps
FSR 3 can add generated frames, which is useful if your base frame rate is already smooth and you want a high refresh display to look fluid. As with any frame generation, it does not reduce input delay, and it works best from a base above about 50 FPS.
A 1440p profile
- 1440p, high-to-ultra settings, FSR Quality if needed.
- Textures at maximum: 16 GB means you rarely need to lower them.
- Ray tracing off, or on its lowest setting.
Picking a partner model
Partner cards differ more in cooling and size than in speed. Some are compact two-fan designs, others are large three-fan versions that run quieter. For a 260 W card in a normal case either works, but measure first, since the large ones can be over 300 mm long.
Getting the best image from FSR
Upscalers work best from a decent internal resolution, so use Quality mode where you can and only step down to Balanced if you need the frames. At 1440p, FSR Quality gives a clean image; at lower internal resolutions, shimmer on fine detail such as fences and wires becomes more noticeable.
Ultrawide and high-refresh displays
A 3440 by 1440 ultrawide has roughly a third more pixels than standard 1440p and sits between 1440p and 4K in workload. The 7800 XT's 16 GB handles it well, and FSR Quality keeps frame rates healthy. If you own a 144 Hz panel, aim for a frame rate cap just below the refresh rate so variable refresh stays active.

Questions about the RX 7800 XT
RX 7800 XT or RTX 4070 Super?
The 4070 Super has better ray tracing, DLSS 3 and lower power draw. The 7800 XT has 16 GB and often higher raster speed.
What power supply does the RX 7800 XT need?
A quality 700 to 750 W unit is a sensible starting point. Check your specific model's recommendation.
Can the RX 7800 XT do 4K?
With FSR in Quality or Balanced mode and high settings, it should manage 4K reasonably. Native 4K at maximum is more demanding.
