Why it is the reference for "high"
When we needed an anchor for the high tier, the RTX 3080 was the obvious choice: a 320-bit GDDR6X memory system, a very wide bus for its generation, and enough raster power for 1440p at high settings without leaning on upscaling.
The 10 GB question
10 GB was generous in 2020 and is merely adequate now. For 1440p it is fine. At 4K with high-resolution textures it is the number most likely to limit the card in a modern open-world game, and the reason we stop at the high tier rather than calling it ultra. A 12 GB version of the 3080 was also sold later, which eases the concern.
Power and heat: a 320 W card
The 3080 is power-hungry by today's standards. A quality 750 W power supply is the usual starting point, and case airflow matters: this card puts a lot of heat into the chassis. If your PC is quiet and cool with a 3080 today, it will be fine for GTA 6.
Living with it at 4K
A realistic 4K profile is DLSS Performance or Balanced, high settings with textures one step below maximum, and ray tracing off or low. That setup should keep the card inside its memory budget while holding a smooth frame rate.
Undervolting a 320 W card
The 3080 responds unusually well to undervolting. Lowering the voltage a little while holding clocks typically cuts tens of watts of power draw and several degrees of temperature for a very small loss in performance, which is exactly what you want for a long gaming session in a game like this.
It is a free tweak that also reduces fan noise, and a good first step before blaming the card for being loud.
A case airflow checklist
- At least two intake fans at the front and one exhaust at the rear or top.
- Dust filters cleaned, since a clogged filter acts like a missing fan.
- Cables kept out of the path between the front fans and the card.
- A side panel left on: removing it usually makes airflow worse, not better.

Questions about the RTX 3080
Is 10 GB enough for GTA 6 at 4K?
Probably, with textures set one notch below maximum and upscaling enabled. It is the most likely bottleneck, which is why the verdict stops at high.
Is the 12 GB RTX 3080 different?
Slightly faster and with a 384-bit bus and 12 GB. This page assumes the original 10 GB card; the 12 GB version has a little more headroom.
RTX 3080 or RTX 4070 Super?
They are in the same performance class. The 4070 Super has 12 GB, uses far less power and adds DLSS 3 frame generation; the 3080 has the wider memory bus.
